News Source Comparison Paper Dietrich 7In the article titled “Trump delays planned ICE raids to see if Congress can solve border crisis” the author, Adam Shaw reports on a move by President Donald Trump to delay planned ICE raids. This article was published by Fox News on 6/22/2019. In the article, President Trump announced on Saturday that, “a planned mass roundup of illegal immigrants by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is being delayed for two weeks in the hope that a bipartisan solution to the border crisis can be reached” (Shaw, 2019).A source informed Fox News that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called President Trump on Friday and talked to him about calling off the raids. On the same day, the Washington Post had reported that the ICE targeted 2,000 families living across ten cities in the country in a process that the president states was for, “removing millions of illegal aliens who have illicitly found their way into the United States’ (Shaw, 2019).The article also has a statement by the ICE who had stated they would not share the specific details related to the operations. The agency then explained that it prioritized removing illegal immigrants who were a threat to national security. Although the President had faced earlier opposition from the democrats, he had his mindset on his decision although the individuals had entered the country illegally, they would be removed legally. In defense of his decisions President Trump pointed out that although some cities were against the deportations, they had high rates of crime. All of these topics tie into this article including affirmative action, immigration, and racial discrimination. Children who are born in Mexico and are brought to the United States illegally grow up in the assimilation theory of immigration as well as the family who brought them over. Everyone begins to live their lives a certain way and it is being taken away from them now.In the news, the media shows a significant level of racial bias regarding immigrants. The description that the program was for removing “millions of illegal aliens who have illicitly found their way into the United States” (Shaw, 2019) paints the immigrants almost like a form of cancer contaminating America. This constitutes racial discrimination, a case that is further progressed by racial profiling which is another important factor in this course. In the article, statements by the President that sanctuary cities have the highest crime rates seem to support the perception that the President has which is, immigrants are a threat and a big contribution to the United States is in the form of crimes. This racial bias and profiling make the people reading the news article perceive the immigrants as almost inferior individuals meaning only to bring instability and crime to this country. Unfortunately, through this form of reporting the people are no longer sympathetic to the immigrant families being targeted and children as well. To many people, the planned raids are further presented as acceptable in that the ICE was only targeting immigrants ‘who pose a threat to national security, public safety, and border security” (Shaw, 2019). The way the article is written makes the readers assume the raids are acceptable and only meant to safeguard the country against a specific group and ethnicity. The article “Ahead of ICE raids, Trump again puts out the fire he set” published by MSNBC also talks about the canceled ICE raids. This article by Steve Benen was posted on 6/24/2019. The article begins by explaining that a week ago, the President had announced the plan to use the ICE agents to “begin the process of removing the millions of illegal aliens who have illicitly found their way into the United States” (Benen, 2019). In the article administration officials stated that the plan had minimal operational value. There were then also officials in the Department of Homeland Security stating they were being used as part of a political strategy by the administration. Benen notes that “although the delay was heartening for the families who were at risk, the reprieve appears to be short-lived as the president declared that failure by the Democrats to pass changes to the asylum laws within the following two weeks, “big Deportations begins”. The article categorically claims that President Trump had announced a plan to use ICE agents to remove millions of illegal immigrants from the country. This shows that the president had the intention of removing the immigrants from the country, representing a form of discrimination and prejudice on his part to consider them unworthy. Reading an article like this makes you believe that President Trump racially discriminates against this group of people. The statements by John Sandweg that the removal of immigrants had “very limited operational value” shows the President is unconcerned about the wellbeing of the families affected, thousands of children, and thus only wishes to satisfy his own desires, which to the public eye are racially inappropriate to treat any human this way.The third article on the same issue is titled ‘Trump delays mass deportation raids, seeks deal with Democrats.’ This article written by, Al Jazeera was published on 6/22/2019. The article begins by stating that President Trump had delayed a nationwide sweep meant to deport undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States. He announced this decision through Twitter, indicating that it would last for two weeks and discuss border solutions. The article states that the administration officials anonymously explained the reason for the delay was because the details of the operations had leaked out to the media and the safety of the officers could be in jeopardy. The article then explains that the operation was meant to target people who had final orders of removal. This also affected families and children whose immigration cases had been fast-tracked by judges. The article also states that the President had quoted an upcoming operation that would target millions of people. In an earlier statement, President Trump said to reporters that, “the ICE and U.S. Immigration were focused on getting the transnational street gang MS-13 out of the U.S.” (Al Jazeera, 2019). Asylum seekers, especially those from Honduras and El Salvador, cite gang violence driven by such groups as the MS-13 as the reason they seek refuge. The cancellation, therefore, illustrates the difficulties faced by the administration in managing the border crisis, at a time when the number of people crossing the US-Mexico border has drastically increased despite other reports made. Although the article is objective, bias, discrimination, immigration, and culture are still present in the article. It is shocking the statement made by President Trump illustrating that he considered the 2,000 families targeted by the operation members of the MS-13 gang. This is a form of racial profiling, considering that every immigrant is tied to a gang, especially families that consist of young children who are being stripped away from their parents. In class, we were given the opportunity to do a racial profiling test and in this, I realized how so many people truly use racial profiling as a way of depicting the difference between individuals. The Wilson Four is a great example of racial profiling because these innocent students raised in the United States their whole lives were questioned about who they are, where they came from, and ultimately were being tried in court to be sent back to where they were born. This is happening to families, people, and thousands of children all across the United States and it is incredible we are grouping an entire population of people and telling them to go back to where they came from, essentially a completely different country than the majority know nothing about and are not accustomed to. I think in these articles it is clear as day the intentions of President Trump, the unfair treatment these immigrants are receiving, and the clear discrimination being presented by government officials and the President of our country.References
