Capstone Paper
< The paper will be based on your participation in shadowing a person in management (this can occur in your workplace). The alternative to shadowing is conducting three in-depth interviews with members of management (this can also occur within your workplace). The goal of shadowing or interviewing is to gain exposure to real application of management theories. < < The desired outcome is the same for either option. The paper is not a repeat of work that has already been completed in the degree program. The main purpose is to observe and cultivate new knowledge that can be communicated into a capstone paper and presentation. Use the text or other outside resource to support your paper, at least four references, not including the personal interview conducted via shadowing or normal interview style. < < Tips for shadowing or interviews: Select one person to shadow who has management responsibility of a business unit within the organization. If you choose the interview option, you must select three individuals who oversee or have management responsibilities in different areas of business (for example: marketing, HR, and finance). Please ask the instructor for assistance if needed. < < Depending on the role(s) of the person/people that you interview or shadow, please pick one of the following tracks to align your project with: marketing, HR, finance, accounting, general management/administrative, operations, or project management. < < Students will write an APA-formatted, 10- to 12-page paper, which includes the following elements: < < < < Page 1: Title Page < < Page 2: Introduction to either the shadowing or interviewing experience. This is where you will provide specific information on your experience, answering the following questions: < < Who was shadowed or interviewed (title, company, place, etc.)? < Identify one example of a strategic management topic you witnessed. < What questions did you ask? < Give an example of how the manager communicated management strategy within their area. < Pages 3–4: < < What did you learn about the mission? < How do they communicate the mission internally? < Discuss how they use a SWOT Analysis and its influence on their operating area. < Discuss how they use this advantage as part of the function-level strategy. < How is quality measured? How is success measured? < Pages 5–6: < < How do they use account management processes? < What role does technology play in the management strategy? Give at least one specific example. < Discuss and provide specific examples of corporate responsibility initiatives. If they do not present any, what do you suggest if you were their consultant? < Pages 7–8: < < Give an overview of the organizational structure. Provide an organizational chart, if you like, as a supporting graphic. < Is the organization agile or rigid? Give at least two supporting examples. < How many employees work for this organization?
